Grading and Describing Books

These terms are generally used to describe books and dust jackets.
Very Fine (VF). Top collectible grade with no flaws, defects, or signs of handling or shelf wear. Some dealers use Mint or As New.
Fine (F). a very collectible, clean, desirable copy. Only a very minimal flaw or two.
Near Fine (NF). A collectible, clean, desirable copy, only minimal flaws
Very Good (VG). The most common collectible copy. With minor flaws- could be a carefully read book, have light shelf wear or soiling, a gently bumped corner, neat previous owner name, but not all of these.
VG would not normally, on a more modern book, have a thumbed or loose text block, dampness flaws, split binding, badly bumped corner, soiled boards, or be ex-library.
Good (G) Barely collectible, with flaws which minimize future appreciation.
Fair or Poor not collectible
